The Fox Glacier Walk!!!

We passed through Greymouth on the west coast... a very grey place I might add as it had a grey river...grey sea... and even a grey sky... come to think of it most of the buildings were grey. It might be there favourate colour!!!
This was on our way to a lovely place called Fox Glacier. This place is in a valley where Mt Cook is located and has two huge glaciers to explore. The village was small with many backpacker places. We booked a glacier walk for the following day, Wednesday. The walk consists of a bus taking you to the foot of the glacier and a guide with a huge pick axe to take you up through the glacier from the river bed level.
Some interesting facts about this glacier: -

1. Its river bed rises 1m every year due to it carving out the valley
2. The bottom of the glacier moves about approx 20cm each day, however certain parts move about 10m a day in the fast parts

When we arrived in the morning for the walk we were given crampons and lots of warm clothing... required as we would spend 6 hours on the glacier. The walk was awesome, steps were carved at the begining and we cruzed up through the bolder field at the start onto the ice section. The further up the glacier we moved the hard it became as there were more cravasts and the got really tall. At our highest point about half way up the glacier (it would take a guide 12hours to get to the top - soo big) we had to squeeze through a cravast about 3m tall and only 30cm wide... bags were taken off and Mark got stuck for a little while before Johnny pushed him out... well done lad!

Great day... did get cold but loads of fun had. Managed a night out afterwards.
